Titus 3 - This Isn't Complicated

Specific Text: Titus 3:1-8

As you've read Paul's letters these last few months, you've had to consider some really tough concepts about who God is and how He operates. There are aspects of Him that we can talk about for hours on end and still not come close to understanding.

But as a whole, God's Word is not all that complicated, and Titus 3 is a great example of that. Listen to the authorities; do what is good, don't be mean, be nice to everyone. For people like us, who have mostly been surrounded by the church and God's truth for our entire lives, the simple instructions this passage gives are followed by most of the people we know. Sure, we mess these things up from time to time, but for the most part this is pretty basic. This isn't difficult stuff, and it really doesn't seem all that profound. Except it is.

Because you've had God's grace in your life for so long, it can be hard to understand how much it has changed you. Verse 3 provides a reminder of what living without grace is like:

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. Titus 3:3

Today's devotional comes with two assignments. First, and most importantly, review what Jesus did for you in v4-6. You must constantly remind yourself of these things, and the more you do so, the more profound and brilliant the simple advice this chapter gives will become.

Second, do you remember reading about the hina clauses yesterday? These are the phrases that provide the reasons for doing something, and often are translated as 'so that.' There are four of these clauses in this chapter. Two are pretty easy to spot (look for the two 'so that' phrases). The other two are a bit tougher, but see if you can find them. The point is that there is a point! Jesus didn't save you just to let you wander off and live for your own selfishness again, He saved you so that you can do these simple, good things; in other words, He saved you so that you could live as He created you to live.

Prayer For The Day - Dear God, thank you for this reminder again from your Word about what you have done in my life. Help me to remember how different this makes me from the world. Thank you for the people you have surrounded me with that give me good examples of how I should live, and help me to do the good things you created me to do. Amen.
