The Ultimate Question

Updated: Mar 20, 2019

Today's Chapter: Luke 18

Specific Text: Luke 18:18-25

Would you follow Jesus if there was nothing in it for you? No blessings, no peace, no rewards? This was the question that satan asked God about Job. He said, "Job only respects you because you have given him so many nice things. Take the things away and Job will turn on you and curse you."

This is the same question Jesus asks this rich young man: "Will you give up everything for me so I can be everything to you?"

The things you have, or maybe more in your case, the things you do (play sports, study, work, other activities) are all blessings from God, just like the riches the young man in today's story had were blessings. But sometimes blessings are a double edged sword; instead of using them to praise God, they end up distracting us from Him.

Jesus is NOT asking you to give up everything you have and do. He DOES demand that these things not distract you from Him, though. The older you get, the more complicated your life will become, and the more distractions you will have. It is so important that you form good habits right now that peel away the distractions in your life everyday so you can use the tremendous blessings and activities God has given you to praise and glorify Him.

Reading the Bible every day, spending time in devotions, praying, and surrounding yourself with positive Christian people are the types of habits that will keep you from turning away from Jesus like the young man did in verse 23.

Prayer For the Day: Thank you, Father, for all of the blessings in my life (name a few). I want to use these blessings in a way that honors you. Please keep me close to you so that my blessings do not become a distraction.

Discussion Starter: What blessing that you've been given would be the most difficult for you to give up? What things have you found that help keep you from being distracted from Jesus? Encourage your classmates - if you're struggling with these questions, ask the friends God has surrounded you with for advice.
