Rice & Beans Month

This March, the ministry of Lahash International is once again inviting our church to join them for Rice & Beans Month!

Siblings Casey Schilperoort and Jen Johnson grew up in our church and are both on staff together at Lahash International in their Portland office. They’ve had the chance to travel to East Africa and visit the local ministry partners and many vulnerable kids who have been directly impacted by projects funded through Rice & Beans Month. In the video below, Casey is on location in Tanzania sharing about a garden project at the local church and the impact on kids living with HIV.

Over the years this annual event has raised more than $100,000 to improve nutrition and food security for the kids in Lahash's Sponsorship Program across East Africa. These donations have helped fund:

  • Water tanks and drip irrigation systems

  • Sustainable farming and poultry projects

  • Daily lunches for kids with HIV

  • Organic gardens in rural villages

  • Community farmland for poor families

  • Emergency food assistance in times of crisis

  • And so much more!

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of this unique event. Since the first year back in 2010, God has used the simple sacrifices of many families, churches, and individuals to help plant fields, fill plates, water gardens, and nourish bodies and souls. That is worth celebrating!

We hope you’ll join in with us again this year. Participating in Rice & Beans Month is truly as simple as it sounds. During the month of March you eat simpler, less expensive meals in solidarity with those in East Africa (and around the world) who can’t afford much to eat. Then at the end of the month, joyfully share your grocery savings to help feed the hungry. Whether you choose to eat more simply for three meals every day, or just three times during the whole month, every meal makes a difference!
