First Perspective on Christ's return: Chapter 1 - 3
Second Perspective: Chapters 4 - 7
Chapter 5 is midway through the second telling of how Christ will come back, and the scene is the throneroom of God. Chapter 4 was an amazing picture of how holy and exalted God is, and it reminded us that God is always reigning and always in control of all that happens.
Now we are shown a picture of God sitting in that throne with a sealed scroll in His right hand which symbolizes His plan for His people. Think back to how God revealed that plan to Adam back in Genesis. It was beautifully simple: God would give Adam life, and Adam would respond with obedience, and this would go on and on. But it wasn't long until Adam proved himself unworthy to execute God's simple plan.
Now the drama in God's throne room has reached the peak when it appears that no one will ever be worthy of putting God's plan into action. No one, that is, until the Lion steps up. So John looks up, but the next words he writes say nothing of a lion, rather that he "saw a lamb, looking as if it had been slain."
What an amazing description of who Jesus is: strong, brave & worthy like a lion, yet humble, sacrificial and poured out like a sacrificed lamb.
Prayer For The Day: Thank you God, for Jesus, the Lion-Lamb. He is worthy to open your scroll & open its seals, because He was slain, and with His blood He purchased for You people like me, from every tribe, language, people and nation. He has made me to be a kingdom and priests and to serve you, our God, and we will reign on the earth. In the name of the Lion-Lamb I pray, Amen.
