Specific Text: 2 Timothy 3:14-17
This is an excellent passage for this time of the year. Summer vacation is only days away. Programs here at the church will wind down for awhile. People will go on trips, and be busy on the farm. For the next couple of months our focus will be different.
As you face these changes, God has one word for you today: Continue. Keep moving forward in what you have learned. Although we put the organized activities on hold for awhile, there's no summer break for being a disciple; in fact, this is a quest you will need to continue on every day that you continue to breathe air.
Your life needs to be more than just breathing air, though. Sadly, most people never figure this out. Life for them descends into a monotonous pattern. Get up, go to work, veg out, go to sleep, and get up the next day and do it all again. Day after day after day. Life is just one breath after another, with no particular aim or goal.
Not so with you. You have God's breath in your life (the Greek words for breath and Spirit are the same). Every time you read the Bible, His breath - the same breath which brought Adam to life at the beginning - fills your life with teaching and training for righteousness (along with some rebuking and correcting every so often).
God put His breath in you for a reason. He wants much more for you than just living one lousy day after another, where the only sign of life in you is the fact that you can fog a mirror. God breathed into you - gave you His Word - so that you may be thoroughly equipped - Complete, Capable & Proficient - at doing good work.
No matter where summer takes you, continue to let God breath into you by reading His Word each day.
Prayer For The Day - Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for breathing your Spirit into my life. As summer soon begins, and my days fill up with a different kind of busyness, help me to continue in what I have been learning and continue to stay close to You and Your Word. Amen.
