Specific Text - 2 Peter 2:1-22
It's one of the greatest traditions in sports. A team goes out into a game and stinks it up. They're playing sloppy, they're head's not in the game, and they are way behind at halftime. Then they go into the locker room at half and the coach lays into them. He's fired up, he knows what's at stake, he knows his team has what it takes to go out and win if they just shape up, because he taught them.
2 Peter 2 is like the mother of all halftime speeches. By now you understand that just because you're a Christian doesn't mean you'll never wander off the path to righteousness again. The devil is constantly on the attack against members of Christ's Church, and he has been since Peter wrote these early Christians
Peter just uncorks here. Do not get tempted to follow the thousands of false prophets that line themselves up against you, because God deals harshly against those who do, writes Peter. Just ask the people who drowned in the Flood, and the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah (vs 4-10). Peter ends this dress down by quoting from the Proverbs. People who continue in their sin are like:
A dog returning to its vomit. (v22)
The next time you are tempted to succumb to the many temptations you face every day, remember this disgusting illustration. You have been saved from the disgusting, slimy hold of sin in your life. Do not go back to it, and certainly do not bend down and begin to lap it into your mouth.
Now get back out there and play like the champion that Christ as made you!
Prayer For The Day: Dear Heavenly Father, forgive me for the many times that I let my guard down and play sloppy as I live my life. Thank you for this rousing halftime speech in 2 Peter 2, and cause this disgusting image to come into my mind the next time I face temptation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
