2 Peter 1 - One Stop Shopping

Specific Text - 2 Peter 1:1-10

The big box retail stores fill a need by making everything you need convenient and accessible in one location. It turns out that God makes it pretty easy to get everything you need to live a godly life:

God has given you everything you need for a godly life through your knowledge of him... (v3)

This is why you get encouraged so often to read God's Word (by the way, v20-21 at the end of the chapter explains why the Bible has so much value). You can not live a godly life without first know who God is and what God has done and is doing. Peter goes on to say that as you learn about God, you participate in the divine nature (!!!) and escape this corrupt world. That's a pretty big deal.

This knowledge can't just sit in the recesses of your brain. It needs to filter out into your life. That's why this week's memory verse is v5:

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge (general facts)...

Peter doesn't stop there. v6-7 go on to show that your entire life and character needs to continually be honed by the doctrine you learn from the Bible.

But the payoff is huge. Peter finished this passage with this promise:

For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (v10b-11)

Prayer For The Day: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me your Word. Help me to know it well, so that I can know you, so that my character would begin to look more and more like Christ, and so that I will receive a rich welcome into your kingdom. Amen.
