1 Thessalonians 5 - The End Is Near?

Specific Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Ever since Jesus ascended back into heaven, there have been prognosticators who think they're the ones who have finally cracked some mysterious Biblical code and can pinpoint the exact day and time that Christ will return and all things will come to an end.

So far they've all been wrong, and that trend isn't likely to change.

Paul here uses the famous analogy that the second coming will be like a thief in the night - a total surprise to everyone, but he does give you two important things you need to remember. First, the reason it will be such a shock to most people is because they will all be totally confident in the material things that they've built up around themselves:

While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly...

Secondly, even though you will never know the exact timing of the end days, because you have been taken out of the darkness and into the light, you have no reason to stumble around like those who live in the dark:

But since you belong to the day, prepare your mind for action, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. (v8 - my trans.)

As you move forward in life, don't get overconfident in your own ability to provide peace and safety, and continue to prepare your mind for action through the use of the Spiritual Disciplines we've been learning about such as regular Bible intake, prayer & worship.

Prayer For The Day - Dear Father in heaven, you are holy and are above all things. Help me to align my life with your will. I pray that you would return quickly and make all things new again. Thank you for bringing me into the light, and I pray you give me what I need so I can remain focused on living for you. Forgive me of my many sins, and cause me to always remember that all things belong to you forever and ever. Amen.
