1 Thessalonians 3 - Do You Love?

Specific Text - 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13

This past Sunday we talked about one of the scariest Spiritual Disciplines of all: Evangelism. We learned that we are compelled to share our faith because we have been brought into God's overflowing grace, and that grace must now overflow from us. We learned different ways we can easily incorporate evangelistic language into our everyday conversations, so the benefits that come from experiencing the peace of Christ can be shared with others.

But even with all of the good advice that Psalm 145 and other passages give us, we still are reluctant to share our beliefs with others, and it boils down to one really hard to accept truth about yourself that you need to come to grips with: You don't evangelize because you don't love.

That last paragraph probably stings. It probably seems presumptuous and even insulting. But ultimately why else would you not share the peace that you have experienced from Jesus Christ with those you come into contact with, much less with your close friends and family? You don't share because you don't truly love.

I know this is true because I don't share nearly enough either. I'm afraid people will think I'm a nut job if I talk to them about Jesus. Ultimately I care more about what that person thinks of me than what I care for them.

Truly loving a person means putting their needs above your own. It means that you want them so badly to experience the peace of Christ, that you care so deeply about their eternal destiny that you would rather be thought of as a fool than not let them know about the saving grace that is offered freely.

This is Paul's prayer for you today:

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. - 1 Thess. 3:12

This is an excellent verse to memorize and to add to your daily prayers, so that you will begin to see everyone you interact with as somebody who needs to be told the Good News.

Prayer For The Day: Dear Father in heaven, thank you so much for the grace that you have shown to me. Increase my love for those around me, that this grace may overflow from me and bless them in the same way it's blessed me. Amen.
