Specific Text: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
An 'influencer' is a person who develops a huge social media following and then makes money from sponsors by featuring their products, or vacation resort, or political agenda. There's nothing inherently wrong with this model, and in fact it can often be useful when trying to select between competing products to see what type of influencers recommend them.
Lots of people want to be an influencer, as it seems like all that person has to do is video themselves trying out all of these awesome new things or traveling the world to post awesome instagram pics from exotic locations. The reality is, however, that most influencers have to work really, really hard to first gather & keep thousands of followers, and then they need to be doing constant research to find the next product that they know their followers will want, and then they need to learn everything about how the product works.
As we begin a new book today, Paul is commanding you to be an influencer:
You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers... (1 Thes. 1:6-7)
With this in mind, you need to do much of the same hard work that a social media influencer does. You need to know people around you well, and you need to know the 'product' that you are influencing for as well as you can - that is the gospel of salvation - so that you can demonstrate the awesome benefits of it. Most importantly, you need to to do the hard work of influencing all you know to trust in Christ by living a life of gratitude for the salvation you've been given.
The big difference between your life and a social media influencer is your goal. Most online influencers biggest priority is building their own brand and getting people to look at them. Your goal is to deflect all of the honor and glory that comes your way for the fruit God allows you to bear away from yourself and to God alone.
Prayer For The Day: Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for the faith that you have entrusted to me. I pray that I can do a good job of modeling it in my life so that others may be influenced for Christ by the way I live. Amen.
