1 John 1 - Don't Be That Guy

Specific Text: 1 John 1:5-2:2

You've seen trucks like this... they have every gizmo, gadget and modification known to man. It seems like it should be able to drive over any surface on the planet, but it's more than likely that the truck has never ever left suburbia. But guys who have trucks like this are often just posers... our old farm trucks see way more action in one day than this truck will see in its lifetime.

Most of us would never drive a truck like this, but we're often tempted to live our Christian lives this way. You've been given lots of modifications and customizations. You've gone to GEMS or Cadets, Youth Groups, the Christian School, Catechism, church every Sunday (maybe even twice a Sunday), Bible studies, read books, watched videos, pray often and now you've been reading your Bible every day.

If you were a truck, you'd look like the one in the picture. You're equipped to go just about anywhere and to do awesome things for the Kingdom of God. But if your lifestyle doesn't match your modifications, you look about as silly as that truck parked in a fancy neighborhood.

If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.

Don't be a poser. God has equipped you to live far differently than the world lives. You've been modified to climb steep hills, forge rivers and blaze trails. This means you submit to others, put your own needs aside, and make sacrifices. It means you "walk in the light." You can see what the world can't: that Jesus is King, so you must live like Him.

Posers spend all of their energy making themselves look good to others, and try to hide their flaws. Don't be that guy. Christians want to find their flaws, and get rid of them, because,

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Realize that as a Christian you've been equipped to live an awesome life. Don't just showboat around town, get out and use this equipment in a way that glorifies the one who has restored you.

Prayer For The Day: Dear Father in heaven, thank you for giving me your light to walk in. Thank you for the dozens of Christian tools and accessories you've equipped me with, and help me to use these gifts you've given to me to live life to the fullest, according to your design. Amen.

Watching this short video will help you understand the letters of John.
