1 Cor. 9 - Just Do It

Today's Chapter: 1 Corinthians 9

Specific Text: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

  • Play like a Champion Today.

  • Never let good enough BE enough!

  • Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

  • Winning is a habit, Success is a choice.

  • Whatever it takes!

  • Practice winning every day.

  • Dedication + motivation = success.

Paul is speaking your language in this passage. You know what it takes to win, to compete, to push yourself farther than you thought you could go. We are known across the state for our athletic domination.

Believe it or not, we don't field sports teams at school because we want to win championships, we field teams because we want to build solid kids who can take the disciplines they've learned playing sports and apply them to other aspects of life. The ingredients for success in basketball or any other sport are very similar to the ingredients for success in everything else.

But Paul isn't so concerned with 'everything else' in this passage. He's concerned with pushing himself as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Keep pushing yourself hard athletically, academically, in your vocation and wherever else God has called you, but take the same attitude toward your discipleship. Pray hard. Study hard. Give hard. Never settle- focus on being more and more like Christ. Take the list above and apply it to your spiritual life.

Prayer For The Day: Father God, thank you for how I've seen success in all areas of life modeled for me by coaches & teammates. Thank you for giving me a spirit of hard work and discipline in my life. Help me to use these same talents to become a stronger and stronger disciple for you and your Kingdom. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Discussion Starter: Give a suggestion for how routine exercises you run in sports can be applied to your life of discipleship (man killers: read a verse, then pray. Then go read two verses & pray. Then go read three verses & pray...)
