1 Cor. 15 - Don't Be Pitied

Today's Chapter: 1 Corinthians 15

Specific Text: 1 Corinthians 15:17-22, 55-58

There are lots of good reasons to be a Christian. Coming to church every Sunday, attending youth group every Wednesday, and participating in service projects all benefit you and make your life better. These activities surround you with good friends who care for you and lift you up, they help you understand God's design for how you should live, and give you opportunities to serve those around you.

But it's all a waste of time... and if you're doing these things people should feel sorry for you more than anyone else.

A waste of time, that is, if you're missing the primary reason that binds us all together. Too many Christians only come to church because it makes their life feel better in one way or another, or they're simply going through the motions. Yes, you do get lots of benefits in your life by doing these things, but if these things are not based on the knowledge of a resurrected Jesus, whatever you gain will be short lived and you will burn out sooner or later. This is why Paul writes, "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied!"

The one thing that everything else depends on, the most important thing that has ever happened, is that Jesus Christ died and rose again. He conquered death. This one thing changes the way we understand everything.

Make sure you understand the importance of Christ's resurrection. Make sure you understand that because of what Jesus did, you have been made acceptable. Make sure you understand that because He lives, you now have new life... life that will never end.

When you understand these things, it changes the reasons for coming to church and youth group and such. You come to be reminded of what Jesus did. You come to be refreshed in the forgiveness of your sins. You come to learn about how you can live according to God's design as a way to show thankfulness for what He's done for you.

Prayer For The Day: Dear Father in Heaven, thank you so much for Easter. Thank you for the reminder that sting of death is gone, and that I have been given new life through the perfect obedience and resurrection of your Son, in whose name I pray. Amen.
