Connecting the Valley to Christ
The vision is the stated goal of the church, and our stated goals are to connect everyone in the lower Yakima valley to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. First, we want to connect people to Christ. That means actively being involved in the kinds of relationships and activities as individuals and as a church that helps people who either don’t know Jesus or are “disconnected” from God for any reason, enter into a relationship with Him. Second, the valley is a broad term but means everyone in the lower Yakima valley. In other words, the vision is not limited to a single ethnic group but aims to connect people from all ethnic cultures to Christ. It is a recognition of the diversity in the community surrounding the church and a recognition that what truly unites the church are not ethnic bonds, but a common living faith in Jesus Christ. A spiritually healthy church that is sharing the gospel with its community will start to also reflect the ethnic diversity of the community. Third, it is ultimately Jesus Christ who we desire to connect people with so that they know the same love, grace, and peace that we experience.
Growing in faith, and growing faith in our families and community
Our mission is what we do and how we achieve our vision of connecting the valley to Christ. As such, it is for us to grow in faith, and to help our families and community grow in faith. The first part of this means that we are living in a relationship of faith with God through Jesus Christ. Once we profess our faith in Christ, it is our calling to continue to grow and mature in that faith. So, one of the things that we do as a church is to provide the kinds of relational ministries, worship, and messages that help us to continually grow in our faith.
We have a responsibility to help our families grow in their faith. The covenant promises we make at the time of baptism echo this commitment to helping our children and our families grow in faith through teaching and discipleship. And we are called to help bring the Kingdom of God into this world as we bring the gospel message, and as we help our broader community build the faith that they may already have. Both the ethnically Dutch and ethnically Hispanic tend to value family. This is an area of cultural overlap and commonality that we can use to help share the gospel and build the church. A focus on families, and growing faith within families regardless of ethnic background, is one of the ways we can build the broader family of God, the church. We have a responsibility and calling to help our broader community in a way that helps to both bring the kingdom of God to the valley and witness the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.
Experiencing and sharing the peace and love of Jesus
Our philosophy or mindset in this is that because we know and experience the peace of Jesus Christ, we also want to share the peace of Jesus Christ with others. We know that we have been saved by grace through faith, and through faith we can and do experience the grace, love, and peace of Jesus Christ. We also feel called to not only grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ but to share that grace and knowledge so that others too may come to know his grace, his love, and his peace.
